Presents RF Amplifier Designs, including small and large signal designs, narrow versus broad band, low noise, and many others. Provides students with useful broad-based knowledge of common amplifier designs used in the industry. Discusses Matching Networks, such as T and P matching networks and single and double stub matching. It also includes Discrete and Microstrip Line matching techniques with computer simulations.... Presents Scattering parameterssuch as realistic listings of S-parameters for transistors and transmission line. Highlights practical use of S-parameters in circuit design and performance evaluation. Features Smith Chart, including series and parallel connections of resistor, capacitor, and inductor networks. It also includes simulations in MATLAB to provide graphical display of circuit behavior and performance analysis. Introduces the Smith Chart as a design tool to monitor electric behavior of circuits. Introduces the generic forms of Oscillators and Mixers, including negative resistance condition, fixed-frequency, and YIG-tuned designs. Explains the most common oscillator designs used in many RF systems. Provides an overview of common filter types, including low, high, bandpass, Butterworth, and Chebyshev filters. Provides design tools to enable students to develop a host of practically realizable filters. Discusses the high-frequency behavior of common circuit components, including the behavior of resistors, capacitors, and inductors. Helps students understand the difference of low versus high frequency responses. Introduces the theory of distributed parameters through a discussion on Transmission Lines. This includes line parameters, sources and load terminations, and voltage and current waves. Outlines the need of distributed circuit theory in today's high frequency circuits. Analyzes active/passive RF circuits through various network description models, especially the two-port network. This discussion also covers impedance, admittance, ABCD, h-parameter networks, and interrelations. Includes a number of important pedagogical features—Intersperses examples throughout each chapter, and includes self-written MATLAB routines and circuit simulations by a commercial RF software package. Assists students by clarifying and explaining the theoretical developments.

While the content of the book is quite good (for a beginner in RF), the fact that the book costs as much as the usual hardcover engineering textbooks, while it is only a paperback, with lower quality paper, is a big negative. This book will definitely not hold up well in your backpack throughout the course of a semester, unless if you take care of it really really well. Even if it does make it through the semester, just think how long you can use it as a reference, before the wear and tear destroys the book (in particular, the corners will start bending, then creases will appear, then the binding will become loose, then the cover will fall off, then pages will start ripping and falling out). For those who will sell their old textbooks, I don't think used paperback textbooks depreciate as well as the more durable hardcover ones. Though, if you're stuck, and the class requires it, then you'll have to be a sucker and cough up the money, of course. The content is pretty good, though. It does a pretty good job teaching dumm people like us about RF design (in particular, it briefly explains the hard stuff [emag], and then shows how easier stuff was derived from that in order to simplify RF design, then it goes on to show how to use the easy stuff [Smith Chart], and that is as far as I am right now in class). If feeling cheap, though, then I think other versions.... are a better deal in this case than this "US Version" textbook.

I bought this as an RF engineer to keep up on my skills.I wish that it had more examples and solutions in the back, for example just the odd numbered problems have solutions in the back so you can work through them.

This book is recommended to who desires a good introduction to RF circuits. The language is easy to understand and the book has a lot of examples. It is not a deep study, but it is enough to understand the basic theory and principles. It was really designed for us, students :) But, even after the course, it will be good to remember basic concepts that sometimes we forget.

Very good book, description very accurate, great seller.

If you're interested in learning RF Circuit design, you need this book. This book gradually steps through important sections of analysis in RF design and works its way up to amplifiers, oscillators and mixers.I bought this book without fully knowing a large number of founding concepts of RF theory. What I found was that this book anticipates this from the reader and invests the first few chapters teaching such topics. As you progress through the high frequency analysis and learning how to apply the smith chart, you're brought into the world of active circuits. Systematically applying earlier taught material to more advanced topics, the reader is left with a good understanding of pratical application.Overall, this is a beginner-intermediate RF text. After completing a study of this text, you'll have enough to make basic RF circuits and subsystems. To meet the needs of real world applications, you will need a supplimentary text such as Microwave Transistor Amplifiers by Gonzalez. To back this, i point out the extreme lack of emphasis on S-parameter data, as well as only 15 pages on broadband amplifiers.Still this is a pretty good book.

This is a solid book for fundamental understanding of RF circuit design and the implications of distributed theory. M-files are very useful for personal calculations in homebrew designs. Book is built around a fundamental understanding of material presented by Ulaby in his book Fundamentals of Applied Electromagnetics. I would recommend both books for anyone trying to understand how to design RF circuits. I also recommend this combination of sources due to the fact the Prof. Ludwig presented the material in this fasion in his RF design classes at Worcester Polytech, in good old Atwater-Kent... Errors may be present in some of his examples, but many high level textbooks contain errors especially in early editions; my class pointed out many as we were the first group to be taught from the book and hopefully they will be corrected in a later edition. The man certainly knows what he is talking about especially when it comes to MRI field coil design. This book will assume you are familiar with complex numbers, basic EM wave propagation, and will make heavy use of matrix oriented math. MatLAB is a must, but included m-files will aid significantly in plotting Smith Charts and ultimately in matching network design. Only 4 stars because I feel this book needs to be teamed up with Ulaby's book to be complete if your not completely familiar with high frequency analysis.

I ordered this book as the used one for the price well below 50% of the new book. The seller described the book condition "as new". The book was in fact "new", in completely pristine condition. The CD attached to the book was still placed in the cover that was not yet open. I like the way the book is written and the selected topics that are treated. It is not to overwhelmingly mathematical, but is rather concentrating on the practical aspects of the rf/microwave design.I received the information about shipment of the product and it came well before the estimated delivery date. I am very satisfied with the seller service.

This book is perfect for the college student looking to learn about RF design or the RF professional that may be looking for insight on a particular subject. The book is well organized and the topics flow together well. One of the best features of this book is the detailed examples that are found throughout. Each one builds on previously learned material and contains each derivation and supplemental graphics. Also, the Matlab files that are provided with the CD help you through the examples.Team this book up with Pozar's 'Microwave Engineering' and you can tackle almost any RF design topic. Highly recommended!
