I very, very nearly passed up the chance to read this book, having been disappointed by several of the most recent "mysteries" featuring Maisie Dobbs, most of which ended up being a vehicle for a humorless and smug character who is, of course, infinitely smarter than everyone else around her, to muse endlessly on human follies and on psychological phenomena. It wasn't very interesting and Maisie became downright annoying as a character; had I met her in person, I probably would have wanted to slap her.Thankfully, I resisted my inclination, because somehow, miraculously, the series has a new lease on life, and instead of being treated to endless series of interior monologues by Maisie, this book has real drama, suspense and intrigue! In other words, it's actually an exciting page-turner, and I literally couldn't put it down, instead of having to force myself to finish it. Hallelujah! Sure, Maisie could stand to be slightly less perfect and less smug (of course, when she is being trained before the journey in the title, when she first picks up a gun to shoot, she hits a bulls-eye with her first shot...) and she still has her propensity to proffer unsolicited wisdom to all and sundry. (It might be wise, but it's like having that annoying friend who is ALWAYS right and knows it...) But those become very minor annoyances, slipping into the background of what is a suspenseful yarn.It's the eve of the 1938 Anschluss that will reunite Germany with Austria and Maisie, back in London at last but still unable to settle, agrees to the Secret Service's plea to help them with a different task: to reunite a "boffin", aka an industrialist/tinkerer with his family, and, not coincidentally, with the British government, who want him to design a kind of landing craft for what it now seems clear will be a new war with Germany. Leon Donat ran afoul of the Germans on a business trip there two years earlier but the Brits have finally managed to ransom him out of Dachau -- but only if a family member shows up in person to claim him. Donat's daughter is too ill to travel, so Maisie is brought in as a ringer. But there are all kinds of complications, not least that Elaine Otterburn, with whom Maisie shares a tragic past, also is in Berlin. Can Maisie get everyone out safely?Ultimately, Winspear doesn't break any new ground here, but that doesn't matter. This is several hours of suspenseful and dramatic reading, with some good atmosphere thrown in as well. I picked it up with trepidation and put it down reluctantly and only after I had turned the last page. After coming close to vowing never to read another Maisie Dobbs novel, I'm now cautiously looking forward to see whether Winspear can keep up this new pace.
I've loved all the Maisie Dobbs novels up to now. But this one has so many gaping holes it is hard to make myself finish it. The first and biggest hole is the second plot line involving the Otterburns; most of the other holes are connected to that. First, Maisie is going to Germany impersonating someone else. Why on earth would she agree to try to find someone (Elaine) who does not and cannot know that?! Is Maisie so gullible that she didn't think that if Otterburn could find out about her secret mission he could find his daughter? And is it reasonable to think, given the nature of the mission, that she would not be accompanied by the Brits and followed by the Germans everywhere she went? Would her "training" not focus as much on Edwina, since Maisie is impersonating her, as much as on Leon? Wouldn't the Brits have expected that the Germans would expect a ringer for Edwina? .... I could go on, and on. I'm struggling to finish it just to see how Winspear is going to explain everything. All in all, this story is way too implausibly convoluted. I hope the next one is back to her usual high standard.
Author Jacqueline Winspear created her "Maisie Dobbs" character in her first series book, "Maisie Dobbs", back in 2003.There've been 12 books so far, with this book, "Journey to Munich", as the latest. From the beginning of her series, the character of Maisie Dobbs was drawn very carefully; with an interesting back story that included both Maisie and people who influenced her life's journey. The plots of the first six or so were equally well drawn, but after with her seventh or so book, it seemed as if Winspear was bored with her characters. Both the plots and characters seemed almost to be "phoned in". Her previous book, "A Dangerous Place", was an improvement on those few middling ones, and this one seems to be moving in the right direction.As long-time readers know, the Dobbs books are set in London, and most were examinations of the city and it's people after the Great War. Maisie had psychiatric training from her mentor, Maurice Blanche, and ran a detective agency. She married, was widowed, sought time and space to recover. As the series continued, time moved on as well. Soon we were in 1938, as the Nazis had come to full power in Germany. Maisie was asked by the government agents if she could go to Munich and extricate a British national who was captured by the Nazis and was being held at Dachau. The German government agreed to free the scientist as long as he was accompanied home by a close relative. As the man's daughter was dying, Maisie was hired by the British government to take her place. She was trained and sent off to Munich. She was also supposed to find the daughter of some acquaintances she had a history with, and persuade her to return to London.Okay, by 1938 the full extent of the Nazis grasp on Germany should have been known by someone as smart as Maisie Dobbs. However, once in Germany, she questioned why and with who and where she should be going. Call me naive, but I sure wouldn't be snooping around a boarded up building, knowing that the SS had broken up an illegal printing operation there and was probably keeping a look out on the building. I also wouldn't be trying to persuade a young woman with a sketchy past and present to return home. Particularly since that young woman was known to have Nazi ties.In "Journey to Munich" the plot is a bit of a stretch but the characters in Maisie's circle to come together. It's a satisfying read as long as you don't ask yourself too many questions. I'm glad Jacqueline Winspear seems to moving back to her original good books.
